THE PERILOUS GAMBLE: ZAWAHIRI'S KILLING AND TALIBAN'S BLAME

Image
The Taliban were alarmed by Zawahiri's murder, and a month after the attack, they tried to pin Pakistani officials with responsibility.                                                                                                                             The Taliban are now unbalanced as a result of the murder of Aiymen Al Zawahiri in the center of Kabul. Or at least their defense minister, who struggles to accept the unpleasant truth and its dire repercussions for the fledgling Taliban government. The Taliban have pledged in the Doha Agreement not to harbor terrorists on Afghan soil, so Zawahiri's presence in a safe house in Kabul is a damning indictment of them. Mullah Yaqoob continues to dispute that Zawahiri was the guy targeted by a US Reaper in the Kabul complex for this precise reason. However, the first US drone strike since the disorganized withdrawal of foreign soldiers from Afghanistan more than a year ago has clearly alarmed the Taliban. Everyone is spe

LIBERALISM: Imitating'social justice' lingo from the United States

Image
Not too long ago, I used to be surprised to hear newly arrived desi students in America begin spewing modern social justice lingo as if they had always known it. What is the source of this unique speaking ability? When someone like me had to painstakingly wade through the fortifications of classical liberalism and then its different ideological foes merely to acquire a hold on post-structuralist theory to see if it applied to my own mission, how could they be so fluent in the language of deconstruction? It's much worse now. It includes not just scholars in the humanities and social sciences but also authors, artists, intellectuals, and anybody else who speaks in public. Today's rapid global connections allow for the spread of liberal fear from America to opinion-makers throughout the world in a matter of seconds. Whatever worries American intellectuals confronting dying liberalism about #MeToo, white supremacy, transgender oppression, or purported Trumpian &q

Political Devastation

The Supreme Court's decision to overturn the deputy Speaker's actions in the provincial assembly as being "without lawful authority" brought the high drama of Punjab's constitutional crisis to a close. The SC ruled that Hamza Shehbaz's election was invalid, paving the door for PML-Q leader Pervaiz Elahi to take over the much sought-after position.   Has the court decision that resulted in the installation of a PTI-backed administration in Punjab assisted in resolving the nation's political crisis? or lowering the tension? Not at all.   The most recent turn of events has been a major defeat for the PML-N since it has allowed its political rivals to retake its provincial stronghold. However, these changes have also thrust Pakistan into unknown territory, which may portend future instability. Two governments—the one in the center and the one in Punjab—don't acknowledge each other as legitimate and could collide.   People who b

Foreign funding or a case of prohibited funding?

Image
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Prohibited Foreign Funding Case verdict will be announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday morning (today). Anxious political pundits across the nation started flying kites on Monday as they were overheard making predictions about the likely verdict, which is sure to have a significant impact on the future of the nation.   While some of these analysts believed that the election watchdog would only decide whether "prohibited" PTI donations should be confiscated in favor of the State, per the July 23, 2002 notification, some pundits believed that if contributions had been received by the PTI directly or indirectly from foreign countries multi-nationals or domestically incorporated into public or private companies, a ban is most likely to be imposed on its functioning as a political party. Although the nation was keenly watching, the majority of experts believed that the case would ultimately move to

TTP dialogue: an unbalanced rationale

Image
To 'persuade' the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to come together for peace in Kabul this summer under the control of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), notably the 'Haqqani' Group, Pakistan flew in tribal elders, Ulema, bureaucrats, and stakeholders. The discussions, which were supposed to start in October 2021, are supposedly at a standstill since TTP appears unlikely to budge from its key demand of undoing the former FATA's merger with the province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Such reversal is not taking place since it would require a constitutional amendment. The TTP's insistence on maintaining its military presence in its home country despite a peace agreement has reportedly drawn the ire of Pakistani interlocutors. On July 30, 2022, a second tribal group from Pakistan arrived in Kabul as part of the most recent effort to advance the peace negotiations. This team joined a previous Ulema delegation headed by Mufti Taqi Usmani. Ulema further urg
