Aside from Legislation

Regardless matter what one may think of Shahbaz Gill, he should not be tortured. Nobody ought to. It is against international law, human rights, and all accepted standards of decency and morality. However, it is not expressly forbidden in Pakistan.   Even if it were (and one hopes it soon will be), the sociopolitical environment of the nation affords little reason to believe that the widespread use of torture could be curbed.   Imran Khan claims that Gill has endured sexual assault in addition to physical and emotional abuse. Unfortunately, he won't be the first or last person in Pakistani detention to experience such. Torture in custody is pervasive and can take the most terrible and humiliating forms. It is particularly widespread in Punjab, and minorities often bear the brunt.   Torture is not only used by the police. There is growing evidence that the military and intelligence agencies use similar tactics in detention facilities as a result of the c

Afghans Who Were Forgotten

When the US withdrew its forces from Afghanistan, it was clear that there was little hope that Washington and its European allies would still be interested in providing aid to the impoverished nation, especially since it had been seized by an adversary they had fought for two decades. Despite claims that famine and poverty were causing parents to sell their kids or that men were buying and selling their kidneys to feed their loved ones, warnings from the UN and other assistance organizations of a humanitarian catastrophe went largely unheeded. Despite pledges, very little aid—certainly not enough to feed hungry infants or prevent hunger—arrived.   The Afghan Taliban had to agree to the world demand for a broadly inclusive administration, women's education, and respect for human rights before receiving aid. There was little chance of assistance given the Taliban's obstinacy, but the Russian invasion of Ukraine seemed to have completely diverted attention awa

Return of Mediaeval Times

A YEAR has passed since the Taliban stormed Kabul to restore control of Afghanistan, some 20 years after American soldiers toppled the country's hardline Islamic government in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Although there was a promise of some restraint, it was a return to the previous order.   Sadly, the Taliban government has completely returned to its previous practices. Afghanistan is experiencing a significant step backward as basic human rights are severely restricted, even though the war is over and there is a largely peaceful environment. The Taliban government may still be in contact with the outside community, but there is no indication that they have received official recognition.   Even those nations that had been in favor of a more lenient approach to them have expressed grave concern over the Taliban because of their own intransigence, which was encouraged by the hard-liners among them, regarding women and other human rights as well as their c

Foreign Office condemns India's deceptive presentation of Partition

The Bharatiya Janata Party, which is currently in power in India, is carrying out Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision last year to designate Pakistan's Independence Day as "Partition Horrors Remembrance Day," which is yet another indication that there are slim chances of any thawing in relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.   The action sparked new tensions between the two nations, with Islamabad sharply criticizing the BJP government for its "mischievous behavior."   The Indian action was sharply condemned in a statement released by the Foreign Office on Thursday. "True to its customary revisionist goal, the BJP-RSS-led dispensation has once again sought to reference the sad events and mass migration that took place in the aftermath of Independence in 1947 in a hypocritical and biased manner."   The statement said, "It is reprehensible that the BJP government is willfully seeking to play with the
