Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games
As part of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Pakistan's great javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem earned a gold medal for his nation on Monday morning.
Nadeem set a record
with a javelin throw of 86.81 metres during the opening round of the
competition.
Arshad achieved an
88-meter throw on his second attempt, shattering his own record. He then
continued to dominate the list on his fourth attempt with an 85.09-meter throw.
The Olympian became the
first Pakistani to hold the mark after setting a new CWG record with a throw of
90.18 metres on her fifth try.
Neeraj Chopra of
India's throws of 87.58 metres (Gold) at the Tokyo Olympics and 88.13 metres
(World Athletics Championship) were defeated by Arshad Nadeem.
This is Pakistan's
second gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. With a record lift of 405 kg,
weightlifter Nooh Dastagir Butt earlier won the gold medal for Pakistan at the
Commonwealth Games 2022.
Nadeem thanked the
entire country for praying for his success in a statement to Geo News following
the historic triumph. "Allah (God) has rewarded me with a gold medal
because of the nation's prayers," he remarked. Nadeem expressed his
happiness at winning the gold medal despite suffering from knee and elbow
problems. I did appreciate the doctors who had worked with me during my
training, though. The top athlete also expressed gratitude to Pakistan Sports
Board (PSB) for giving him access to facilities.
Neeraj Chopra of India,
who was absent from the competition because of an injury, was also missed by
Nadeem. Nadeem, a star performer in the CWG, also urged the government to give
athletes access to facilities on par with those seen abroad. In the upcoming Islamic games in Turkey, he
pledged, "I will also win a medal."
